It happens every year. May rolls around, I get the first whiff of warm summer air, and I just can’t stomach the thought of putting on another cardigan, no matter how cold it is in my office. Summer is my very favorite time of year. Summer is my happy place. Nothing fills me with more peace than sitting out back on my patio under my pergola, watching my lil guy play in his sandbox, and watching the sun set. Sunset in summer is the most amazing part of the year.

You know what else comes with summer? Sun-kissed skin (even if it’s from a bottle) skirts, (more) flip flops (I do live in Florida, after all; there aren’t too many months that don’t include flip flop weather) magazines by the pool and summer nail polishes. When I’m planning my weekly manicures, it’s sort of like planning my outfits; dark greens, red and blues are like cardigans and I just can’t bring myself to wear them, either.

I have three really beautiful colors to show you today to get summery on your digits. The first two are courtesy of Nikki, a very sweet Instagram shop owner I’ve been getting to know and ogling her store!  She is always running specials on her Essie stash, so if you’re a fan of nail polish, FOLLOW HER!

Nikki is going to be my very special guest this summer for a series on thrifty style, but she’s also a nail polish (ESSIE!) addict and sent me two gorgeous colors to try out: Essie Jamaica Me Crazy and Essie Turquoise and Caicos.

First up, Essie Jamaica Me Crazy. WOW, I loved this one.

Essie Jamaica Me Crazy is a bright fuchsia color with a slight shimmer and gorgeous shine. I knew from the first stroke I was going to be in love with this color. I told Nikki I loved glitter and shimmer polishes, and somehow she knew this one was for me. I love the way Essie Jamaica Me Crazy applied, too: it was almost a one-coat manicure, but I added two for good measure and topped it with Seche Vite.

Next on the list is my current obsession, turquoise, presenting in Essie Turquoise and Caicos from last year’s Resort Collection.

This? Is like a trip to the beach in a bottle. Maybe it’s the name, maybe it’s the color (a light, fresh creme turquoise) but I can almost feel the ocean waves. Essie Turquoise and Caicos has a pretty good application, but the formula was a little light to me and needed two coats…probably could have used three, because there were a few streaky patches. However, Essie Turquoise and Caicos lasted a week with just a few chips! This is two coats topped with Seche Vite.

Last but not least, we have Julep Kaylen.

Girls, does this not SCREAM summer to you? Julep Kaylen was in my March Maven box and I haven’t tried it yet because honestly the mood hasn’t struck me. I’m not really an orange person unless it calls to me, and last night, Julep Kaylen called me! The color is a bright, almost neon, orange creme. It dries almost matte. Now, this one was kind of a pain in the butt to apply. What you see above is four layers, not including the base and top coats. I used e.l.f. White (just white; I guess I bought it before they were “good” at nail polish because it’s OLD) as a base to make the orange pop more. Of course, white is notoriously streaky, so I had to apply coat after coat after coat of Julep Kaylen before I was happy with the result. It was overcast this morning, so I didn’t get to see it in full sun, but I know it’s going to be fab! I think this would also look amazing with a little glitter on top.

I’ve been toying with the idea of having the celebrity roundup become a biweekly feature as celebrities have stopped being interesting and doing dumb stuff and on account of how many Justin Bieber posts can a girl write without starting to feel like a Belieber?

Today would technically be my “off” week, but I could NOT possibly let a Friday go by without leaving y’all with the most entertaining story of the week: the fallout of Reese Witherspoon’s arrest for obstruction of justice (and oh yeah, her husband’s for a DUI.)

Earlier this week, Reese Witherspoon issued a mea culpa on Good Morning America, admitting she had a few too many to drink, was panicked when her husband was arrested, and said “all kinds of crazy things.”  (Understatement of the century.)

TMZ published the dash cam footage of the arrest, providing us with fodder for the Roundup ANd some amazing quotes…like…Ah-MAZE-ing quotes. I knew the Reese Witherspoon arrest quotes were good, but didn’t know the Reese Witherspoon arrest quotes were going to be THAT good.

Turns out, last week’s police report did not do it justice. The first shows Reese stumbling out of the car to accost the officer, the second is mostly audio of a personal conversation between Reese Witherspoon and her husband, Jim Toth (who fully admits to what he’s done and blames her for making the situation worse than it could have been.)

I took the liberty of creating a few images of the Reese Witherspoon arrest quotes…for inspirational purposes. Southern girls, keep being feisty. One love.

Several months ago, I bought a huge box of somebody’s old clothing for refashioning purposes. Although there were lots of great clothing (WAY bigger size than what I normally wear), this great experiment went nowhere because the holidays came and I got busy and started one refashion that took me months and months to finish.

One particular dress in this bunch has haunted me with its adorable black and white floral pattern. It started as a size 16 long sleeveless dress with buttons up one side (what??) The material is light, flow-y rayon, and I knew it would be perfect for summer..but how?

I thought of many things I could do with this dress. I thought about a maxiskirt and also a maxidress.I thought about turning it into a short dress, a fitted dress, a loose dress. I never once considered turning it into pants because I ain’t stupid. Then it came to me: hi low dress refashion

I used to hate hi low dresses. How stupid. Like, the mullet version of a dress? Party in the front, business in the back? Basically, we’re talking an uneven hem, with the front shorter than the back (for those of you who havent’ been following my Pinterest boards and why not? How dare you…)

Then they started to grow on me, so I got to work transforming this long, oversized, slightly frumpy dress into a hi low dress refashion.

Hi Low Dress Refashion

I first drew a new neckline with chalk. I know it looks atrocious because I had to do a couple lines to get it right AND the cat was all in my business.

Next, I drew the front of the hi low dress. I didn’t have a pattern; I used pictures of hi low dresses I liked and tried to mimic the hemline. To get the right length for my hi low dress refashion, I measured on my body from the neckline to where I wanted it to fall, then measured on the dress the same length, adding about 2 inches for mess ups and my hem.

Please ignore how terrible the chalk line looks on this..hey, chalk brushes off, people!

I turned the dress inside out so I could get the back of the dress even with the front. This part was tricky because it’s sort of an oval (the has to gradually flow into the longer back.) I used the same chalk to draw the back hemline of the skirt. Again, I did not use a pattern; this was all eyeballed.

The next step was the sides of the dress. I measured 2 inches from each side starting with the side seam (not measuring from the true side of the dress.) I got this measurement from trying the dress on and pinning the sides to see how much I needed to cut off the sides.

The next step of my hi low dress tutorial was sewing. I hemmed the arm holes, the neckline, and the hemline. I tried on the dress and it was a little baggy in the front. The dress already had darts in the front, so I sewed another half inch on each so pull the dress in a little. I added two lines of loose threads 1/4 inch apart from each other  about a half inch from the top hem of the neckline. I pulled the loose threads to create a little detail/ruffle to the top of my hi low dress and make the straps fit a little better.

And full disclosure here: I ended up not hemming the bottom of this. Although it is rayon and will fray, the hem I tried to do just didn’t look right. I need to work on my hemming skills, clearly. I used Fray Check to keep ….frays in check.

Some refashions keep some semblance of the old garment, but I think this hi low dress refashion looks like a completely different dress. I cut off a lot of material, but it fits great! I can pair it with a denim jacket (oh yes I did!) or wear it without for a summer evening out to dinner with Kel. This just goes to show that refashioning is about seeing the potential in the material, so a tip for all you refashionistas out there? Don’t overlook a big, bulky dress when you’re thrifting. It might hold something amazing.

We all have those “aha!” moments when it comes to beauty and style, like the first time you figured out how to perfect your eyeliner, or manage your unruly curls or how to mix prints without looking like a goober. Pros

• The Aveeno Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream texture is great. I don’t need too much extra moisture because of my naturally oily skin, and so many night creams I’ve tried in the past are way too thick and take too long to penetrate my skin. Aveeno Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream has a very light texture and soaks into my skin almost immediately. When I wake up, my face is soft and smooth, not oily and “wet” feeling; that’s how I know it’s working.
• A little goes a long way, and when I say that, I mean DON’T PUT TOO MUCH ON. I made that mistake the first time I used Aveeno Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream and I could see it on my skin. Take the time to massage it into your skin in circular motions. The 1.7 oz jar will last a very long time, even with nightly use.
• I saw results in the tone and color of my complexion after only a few days using Aveeno Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream. I have very uneven color, and this cream helps even if out so my makeup has to work less hard…or so I don’t have to wear makeup at all on lazy days. Aveeno Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream is supposed to decrease the appearance of brown spots, but I don’t have those yet, so I cant’ speak on that.
• The price of Aveeno Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream isn’t bad compared to other night cream products on the market and especially compared to high-end creams.

Cons

• The fragrance of Aveeno Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream is not the best, frankly. It isn’t intolerable, but it’s not something I’d like to slather on my body every day of my life and let people smell me (gross, Amanda…) The fragrance is very natural and organic, which makes sense because it’s free of fragrances and perfect for sensitive skin, but I do like a slightly stronger scent for my products. 
• Frankly, the cheap part of me cringes at the thought of paying $17 for a night cream, but as I mentioned, a little goes a long way.
• The Aveeno Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream doesn’t have a wrinkle-reducing component; however, Aveeno offers other products in this line that do.

All in all, I’m loving the Aveeno Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream to give me smoother, more even skin and keeping my oily skin in check. Aveeno Positively Radiant Intensive Night Cream is available at drugstores and national discount stores, or online (Amazon, $16.99) Learn more about the product on the Avenno website.

GOOOOOD morning Celebrity Roundup friends! Today is brought to you by Einstein Bros Bagels Vanilla Hazelnut Iced Coffee which I recently discovered is 1) cheap 2) delicious 3) FILLED WITH CAFFEINE  4) right downstairs. So that is that. And that? is delicious.

It goes without saying that Einstein Bros Bagel Vanilla Hazelnut Iced Coffee will not cause you to lose your ever-loving mind and get all Southern Lady with a Chip on Her Shoulder like other beverages. Maybe someone should have told that to Reese Witherspoon.

Oh yeah, have you heard? Reese Witherspoon, who some people know and love and some people (like David Spade) couldn’t pick out of a lineup, was arrested last weekend in Atlanta after verbally berating a police officer who was arresting her husband, CAA agent Jim Toth. Variety broke the story (WHAT? I know, right!?); Jim Toth was pulled over after cops saw him driving over the line around midnight last Saturday night in a 2013 Ford Focus (!!!!!!!!) . Cops reported he appeared disheveled and smelled like alcohol, which promoted the officers to administer a sobriety test. While he was performing the sobriety test in a Walgreens parking lot (!!!!) Reese Witherspoon, who was sitting in the passenger seat of the car, became more and more irritable and began hanging out the window like some drunk sorority girl.

Although the cop told her to “sit on her butt and be quiet”, Reese Witherspoon continued her tirade, accusing officers of being fake police (ummm???) As the officers arrested Jim Toth for suspicion of DUI, Reese, who had clearly been drinking a few too many and I don’t mean Einstein Bros iced coffee, exited the vehicle and said the words every celebrity thinks, but doesn’t say:

GAH do you love it or do you love it? And if you love it, please tell me on a scale of 1 to 10 how much you love it…because I love it an 11.

She continued to tell the officer he would be on national news (uh, yeah) and then said she’s allowed to get out of the car because she’s an American and can stand on American soil. To add insult to injury, TMZ recently published a surveillance  video of her getting cuffed (!!!!!!!!)

I do feel a bit sorry for Reese Witherspoon, because as the old saying goes, you can take the girl out of the South but you can’t take the South out of the girl. And she’s rull embarrassed  for sure; she didn’t mean for all those thoughts to come out of her mouth, y’all. Who am I to judge? I have smarted off many a time to many a person whilst stone cold sober, so things happen. However, here is a completely unfiltered look inside a celebrity’s mind, and it’s delicious…like cheesecake and strawberries. Nom. I’m eating it up with a spoon.

Will this be the week we don’t talk about Justin Bieber? Nope. Let’s be frank here: Justin Bieber smokes pot. Right? I mean, how can he not? His friends smoke pot. He was basically photographed smoking pot and it was blamed on somebody else. Now, just a couple days ago, Swedish officials found pot on his tour bus. Come on, people, JUSTIN BIEBER SMOKES POT..including the very pot that was found on HIS TOUR BUS.

Oh no! the Beliebers say, There is no WAY that was Justin’s pot! UGH! Quit spreading lies about him! Really now, how do you explain this picture (other than that I am super good at PicMonkey):

• Kendra Wilkinson was in a car wreck last week that sent her to the hospital. Thankfully, two layers of airbags saved her (think about it….let that marinate….)
• Teen Mom Star Jenelle Evans was arrested for heroin and assault this week; the drugs were found in her possession when cops arrived to her home to investigate a domestic dispute with her husband, Courtland Rogers. They sound lovely…COUPLES DATE!

I’m addicted to beauty videos and how tos. I used to spend many,many minutes watching Makeup Geek on YouTube learning new eye makeup styles. I cant’ resist clicking on any half updo hair tutorial or style tutorial I come across.

You know what I love so much about beauty tutorials? I always learn something new from them, even if it’s just a tiny hunk of knowledge. It’s rare that I do exactly what the tutorial tells me to do; in fact, I think of them more of inspiration than anything else.

Anyway, my hair is getting seriously out-of-control long, and there is only so much I can do with it. When side chignon  and sock bun are getting old, and sexy ponytail has seen it’s better days, I’m on the hunt for something new. Today I’m going to recreate the “Pretty Little Liars” half updo tutorial, my newest long hair hairstyle, from BlogHerTV (watch to the end and find out how you can win $250!)

Like, I said, the name of the game for me is inspiration, and we’re all doing ourselves a disservice by thinking we have to have the same products or styles from tutorials (or even when you plan your wardrobe from Pinterest.) My look is sort of like the half updo tutorial, but a bit different.

Here’s what I used:

First, I did not have hot rollers, so I just went with my old standards.By the way, that Conair Curling Iron RULES.

I took the top part of my hair and curled it with my Conair curling iron just like she did with her hotrollers. I probably should get hot rollers, huh? I didn’t use a straightening iron although I do have one..my hair is extremely long and it would take FOREVER, so I just threw in a few more big curls with the curling iron.

Next, I teased. You guys? I’ve never been able to tease my hair into a poof successfully. I even bought one of those bump-its to see if I could fake it with no dice. But today, from the half updo tutorial, I learned to tease my hair..it’s a miracle.

Next, I smoothed it out with the Nexxus Youth Renewal Rejuvenating Elixir from this month’s Birchbox. This is actually a pretty cool product because it smooths and gives a little shine.

For the next step of the half updo tutorial, I pulled little pieces from the side and twisted them around my smoothed out poof. I pinned them in the back with a whole bunch of bobby pins.

This is a very easy, trendy style that didn’t take nearly as long as I thought it would. It would look adorable with shorter hair, too.

Spring has sprung you guys! After a chilly season that lasted way too long (and made me get really creative with my boots and leggings and scarves) the warm Florida weather has finally gotten here. Any bets on how long it will be until I’m complaining about the heat? Now it’s time to bust out the bright colors for spring.

I love love love me some spring colors, y’all. When it’s warm out, I can’t help but wear pinks, bright purples, greens and orange. And while I do know that black and white is on trend, I just can’t do it (unless there is a pop of color, then we’ll talk.)

A few weeks ago, I was obsessed with red, black and neutrals and wore them more or less every day for a week. Before that, it was emerald. Now that our beautiful weather is setting in (for about 3 seconds before it turns to blisteringly hot again) I’ve been into light, bright spring colors, like coral and mint outfits. Here are some of my latest style obsessions.

Ok, so this isn’t coral and mint or even mint by itself, but I just had to add it because it goes along with my turquoise, aqua, mint obsession of late. I was feeling the mint color this week so I layered this over Zoya Wednesday and LOVE the look of it….it’s like a trip to the Gulf!

Last week was Kelsey’s spring break, so we decided to take a short trip to our favorite place, Savannah GA. I don’t know what it is about that city that has me so  enchanted, but my husband and I can never get enough. Luke, however, can definitely get enough. Let’s just say our Savannah GA virtual tours weren’t his cup o tea. He’s more of a cars and dinosaurs kind of guy.

I”ve been begging Kelsey to go on a walking tour of the city for the past few trips, but they have always been during too hot or too cold times. We’ve done the trolley tours, and they are great, but I love being able to stroll down the shaded streets and soak in the history. We bought a book called Sojourn in Savannah by Kim Traub Ribbens that includes four walking tours and a map of the historic district. BEcause we had the toddler in tow, we choose one of the shorter walks. It gave me a chance to do my own little Savannah GA virtual tour on Instagram and Vine (an aside about Vine: I haven’t figured out the best use of this platform until now; it’s the perfect solution for when you need more than a picture, but less than a video.)

Our walk took us to Columbia Square.

There must have been a wedding here the day before because there were petals in the fountain. Luke enjoyed tossing the ones in the ground into the Columbia Square fountain. Note: this is as much fun as he had the whole time.

Next, we walked up State Street.

We saw the Kehoe House, a bed and breakfast (or maybe just a bed…) that only accepts peeps older than 21. Sorry, Luke.

On our Savannah GA Virtual Tour, we passed the Owens-Thomas House and this amazingly gorgeous garden. Why isn’t this my life? I was born to be a person with a lux garden like this (and the kind of person who hires a gardener to tend to it.) (I currently do not employ anyone who tends to anything.)

  At some point, we got to Oglethorpe Square.

And the Green-Meldrim House which is right next door to a lovely Southern courtyard beside St. John’s Episcopal Church.

I remember a day, not long ago, when celebrity gossip was about real celebrities. Do y’all remember that? Geez man, those were the days. Remember when poor ‘ol Whitney Houston died? And Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes got divorced? And when Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt got engaged? That was some gossip I could sink my teeth into, people. Now what do we have? Amanda Bynes crazy antics? Justin Bieber spitting on people? Meh.

I’ve decided that I just am going to embrace all these little kids running around acting cray. This is our reality, people. The stars of our yesteryear are normal. They are settling down, making movies, not going to clubs drinking, not cheating on their wives and keeping it private when they do. Real stars are gettin’ smart, you guys, so if we’re going to continue caring about celebrities, better get on board for the Adventures of the Rich, Young and Famous (for no reason.)

I’ll start with Amanda Bynes,  a “retired actress” at the ripe old age of 26, who is 1/3 crazy, 1/3 young and unguided and 1/3 possibly on drugs. Amanda Bynes has shown increasingly unusual behavior since her DUI last year. A few weeks ago, Amanda Bynes revealed a shocking transformation on Twitter: a super thin frame, cheek piercing (!!!) and long curly locks. A few days later, Amanda Bynes Tweeted that she wanted rapper Drake to “murder” her vagina, otherwise known as the Tweet that sent the whole Internet for eye-bleach and also caused bottom-dwellers at TMZ to lose their minds and tweet about it for days and days and days.

Amanda Bynes Twit-scapade continued when she Tweeted another picture of herself, this time wearing a sexy bustier and showing off her broken fingernail. The behavior has trickled off the INternet and into real life; Neighbors of the good-girl-gone-bad told RadarOnline that Amanda Bynes replaced regular lightbulbs with red ones and left her door open 24/7. Amanda Bynes erratic behavior showed up in Times Square Thursday as she wandered the streets of NYC wearing a short velvet skirt, fur trimmed jacket, short socks and tennis shoes and covering her face with a blue button up shirt.

So what’s really wrong with Amanda Bynes? Probably the same thing that’s wrong with Justin Bieber, who is in hot water after being accused of battery by a neighbor….over a Ferrari. File that under “More Money than Sense”. Allegedly, Justin Bieber had returned home from his overseas concerts and got into a verbal altercation with a neighbor about 9 a.m. when the neighbor dared confront Justin Bieber of driving recklessly…aka 100 MPH in the gated community. The neighbor, a 47-year old father of three, said Justin Bieber said “I’m going to f***ing kill you!” and spit in his face.

JUSTIN. BIEBER. SPIT. IN. SOMEONES. FACE. Like, really? What the heck, Justin Bieber? What does that solve? Did you I just talk about how last week you were so amazing and awesome and grown up at such a young age? This ain’t the playground, son. You’re not fighting over the swings. You’re fighting in the front yard of your multi-million dollar mansion in a gated community OVER A FERRARI.

Although Justin Bieber denies the spitting, eyewitnesses say it’s true, and he could be sentenced to anger management courses (which is probably a great idea considering his recent shenanigans.)

But really, how embarrassed are that guy’s kids right now anyway? “I CANT BELIEVE YOU WERE FIGHTING WITH JUSTIN BIEBER, DAD!”

• Holly Madison, former Girl Next Door, dished about how hard breastfeeding is. UMMMMMM, do you not read my blog, Holly?
• Skiing sensation Lindsey Vonn is dating Tiger Woods and she has the senior yearbook superlative pictures to prove it.
