Three steps to frizz-free hair

August in Florida is mind-numbingly hot and humid. Remember when you guys were all complaining about the heat in mid-July as if you’ve never experienced hot weather before? (No, I’m not bitter…) Well, imagine you experience eight solid months of that blistering heat.

By August, us Florida girls have pretty much given up on having nice hair. Nope, sorry, it’s Frizz-town, USA, population every girl with medium to long hair. Personally, mine isn’t curly or straight; it’s a disgusting hybrid of knots and tangles and split ends and there is no hairstyle that can contain it. The best I can do is a lopsided bun or ponytail, which is the best you can do when you have exhausted all cute hair possibilities.

In desperation, I searched my Pinterest good hair board for a solution. I found a no-shampoo (also called no poo shampoo) pin an was intrigued. How can you not shampoo your hair? Cuz that’s gross. What I learned was that traditional shampoo acts as a detergent , stripping your hair of natural oils that keep it shiny and frizz free. No-shampoo (no poo) treatment isnt technically no shampoo. It’s basically baking soda and water. That’s it. And honestly, with my no-shampoo treatment, my hair hasn’t felt this clean in months. Years, maybe. The no-shampoo formula an easy 2 tablespoon : 8 oz of water ratio in an old shampoo bottle. Shake to mix, squirt on wet hair/scalp and massage. MASSSAAGGEEE..

My second secret is the new Dove conditioner. I was able to try it thanks to BlogHer, and it came at the perfect time — the no-shampoo plan included apple cider vinegar as the conditioner and I’d rather not smell like fish and chips, thanks.

The Dove Hair Therapy line includes two daily treatments and three conditioners. I tried the Nourishing Oil Care Conditioner, which had a light, creamy feel without any greasiness and an awesome smell. Even better than apple cider vinegar, if you can believe it.

The Dove Hair Therapy line has Patented Micromoisture Serum targets damage, repairing the surface of hair by sealing lifted cuticles, which in laymans terms mean it cuts the frizz, y’all. It said it would cut up to 90%. I wasn’t sure if I believed it. How many others said the same thig? But it works an works amazingly and keeps on working, even in heat and humidity. Even after hours at the beAch, and here is proof:

My third secret is cutting the heat in my styling. I have been using no-curl techniques like sock bun, but also keeping my hair in a towel until its almost completely dry, which saves you from extensive hair dryer time. Add that to no poo method and I have clean, healthy hair.

With these three steps – no shampoo shampoo, Dove conditioner and no heat styles —  I’m in love with my hair again.

Your hair looks amazing! So pretty. Do you think you’ll stick with the baking soda? I may have to try that.

I haven’t used traditional shampoo in months and my hair has never looked better! I’ll definitely try your baking soda concoction soon. My fav “cleansing conditioner” is Hair One with Argan Oil (found at Sally’s or local beauty supply stores like Beauty Max) but it’s pricey! Baking soda and water are more in my price range! Thanks for the tips!

It’s amazing that we’re SO conditioned to buying into the shampoo thing. I’m amazed at my hair now! And I can go longer without washing (my dirty little secret, no pun intended ;) ) Thanks so much for stopping by!

Any women over 40 or getting close can tell weird stuff starts to happen, can’t lose weight, acne and finally frizzy hair. I’m not sure when it happened, but my natural color turned to dishwater blond, and my natural curls have turned to FRIZZ!

So I went to my wonderful and really expensive hair dresser to have the usual cut and color and when she went to wash my hair she said that they just got a new shampoo and conditioner called Shielo and that is smelled great. So she washes my hair and OMG – is she right – it smelled incredible but then she put the conditioner in and ran it through my hair and within one minuet she could run her fingers through it with no problem, I was amazed. Its the Hydrating line from the Shielo line. When I used the Shielo products on my hair at home and was amazed again that it smelled great but was so smooth and tangle free, my hair is long and very fine so is also easily weighted down and tangled but now it is soooo easy to style I cant believe my hair feels this good after a color and after blow drying.

  • [...] of hair. Yes, it takes forever when I want to do it up. But with short hair, you can’t do a sock bun and or a side chignon or a long ponytail or my personal favorite, a messy bun. So long it [...]
