Iris from Iris Focused on Fashion, Janine from J9 Style, and Amber from Real Girl Glam are hosting a really fun linkup the next few weeks where us Florida girls tell you how we survive the blistering hot summers without losing our sense of style.
And lemme tell you, when it’s 98 degrees and 1000 percent humidity and sweat is literally running into your mascara, it’s hard to feel stylish.
Their first prompt is my go-to “beat the heat” outfit. I’ve been talking about skirts all the time lately, and I’ve made a challenge with myself that I would wear as many skirts this summer as I can. So far, I’ve thrown on a skirt every day to work since mid-May and worn skirts or dresses on the weekends, too.
Part of this has to do with the 15 minute walk to my office every morning and evening. By the time I get to my car, I look atrocious, and if I’m wearing pants, can’t even get that cool breeze where the sun don’t shine.
Come on, ladies, this is the real reason we wear skirts.
I love pairing my skirt with a cute tank top and then sometimes a cardigan. It may be hot outside, but usually my office is freezing. Tank tops are a must here in Florida. If you have less than one full drawer of tank tops, you’re doing it wrong.
This is a homemade skirt with some $5 fabric and tender loving care. And this tutorial for a J. Crew inspired skirt the blogger has named the “Flirt Skirt”. I made that top, too, from an old Florida Gator’s tshirt I got for free from a basketball game. The skirt is a light material and flows really nicely, which is a must when it’s hot out. I love making tank tops out of tshirts these days because what’s cooler than a tshirt? A tshirt with no sleeves. Holla if ya hear me.
This is what you’ll find me in pretty much every day of my life from May till October (Summer is long here, y’all.) I’m into really bold colors and patterns lately.
What’s your favorite summertime fashion?

Forget how cute the skirt is. You look so much like my husband’s cousin sometimes. This is the second time I’ve gotten on here and said “Why does Amanda have pictures of Chrissy on her blog?” So for your clothing re-do project. How about re-doing a mom’s skirt into a dress for her fashionista daughter?
Look at you girl! You’re just the coolest person EVER – making your clothes! They look AWESOME!!!!
I do NOT miss the Florida heat … but I do miss Florida!
Okay, seriously? You made the skirt AND the top? Where do you live? I want to be besties so you can teach me how to be crafy and make things! =) You look so cute!
Your outfit looks amazing.
I live south of Tampa so I understand your summer heat woes. Every year I promise myself to wear more skirts and I never do. I’m such a chicken about making clothes but I might have to try this skirt… and ruffled tank.
I can’t believe you made that outfit! It’s so cute. You’re inspiring me to get my sewing machine out.

Oooh yes, the eternal problem of living in Florida – the outdoors are scorching hot, but anything inside is like an icebox! I never leave home without a cardigan or some other type of sweater to throw on when I go indoors. Otherwise my teeth will inevitably be chattering!

Skirts & tanks all the way in the summer! And you’ll pretty much never see my hair down again during the day until fall. That is my favorite skirt of the ones you’ve made so far – love it.
